This scale was to essentially measure a mineral’s ability to scratch another mineral.
For example, the stone Talc is very soft, almost like chalk, hence why it is labeled 1 on the Mohs hardness scale.
Diamond on the other hand is the hardest mineral known to humankind hence why it is labeled 10 on the Mohs hardness scale.
Depending on the “hardness” of a healing crystal determines how you can properly clean it without damaging the stone.

Certain healing crystals can be cleansed under running water or saltwater while others can't.
Some healing crystals and stones can be left to sit under the sun, while others certainly cannot.
As mentioned above, stones and crystals can be categorized for their hardness using the Mohs hardness scale.
Anything from 1-6 is considered a soft stone on the hardness scale.
Soft stones and healing crystals should never be cleansed using water. Many of these soft stones are too brittle to be left under running water or even salt water.
